What’s up the week of February 11th?

Hello! I have officially taken over Mr. Woodall’s classroom and blog, so you’ll be able to find all the info you need for the upcoming week right here.

****Reminder: Your “Scarlet Ibis” essays need to be turned in by Monday. No essays will be accepted after Monday. Please bring them in!

This week will be a shortened week because of the holiday on Friday, Feb. 15th. That means that your vocab quiz for unit four and your grammar quiz will be on Thursday. Make sure you keep up with your studying and complete your homework as well. The vocab homework is a very important grade, plus it helps with your studying!

We will be starting our first novel on Monday. We will begin reading Animal Farm by George Orwell.

As per our usual routine (last week not withstanding) we will begin class with a grammar lesson/mentor sentence. This week we will be working on the correct ways to use “there/their/they’re” and “your/you’re.”

We will also begin working on Vocab Unit Four. Because of the short week you will need to double up on homework assignments at some point during the week so that Choosing the Right Word, Synonyms and Antonyms and Completing the Sentence are all done by Wednesday.

Monday we’re going to work on introducing Animal Farm and will be reading chapter one in class.

Tuesday we will work on an annotation/close reading activity with Old Major’s speech, which is featured in chapter one. Not sure what a close reading is? No problem! You’ll find out Tuesday and become a professional in no time!

Wednesday we’ll work on reading chapter 2 of Animal Farm in class and we’ll also finish up with our close reading activity and work on identifying the characters in the novel and discuss what methods of characterization Orwell uses in the novel.

Thursday your Summer Reading Papers ARE DUE! This is the LAST day that we will be accepting these papers so please turn them in! On Thursday we will also have our vocab quiz and our grammar/mentor sentence quiz. We’ll also continue our discussion on the first two chapters of Animal Farm and talk about what it means to rebel and why language is important. We’ll also take a close look at the seven tenants of Animalism.

It’s going to be a great week!
